The frigate Jylland is a historic naval vessel from 1860 – built for war, used as a royal ship, and preserved as a museum. Today, it is docked in Ebeltoft, where you can move through the ship’s many decks and experience seafaring life, craftsmanship, and maritime technology from a pivotal period in Denmark’s history – the Schleswig Wars.
Experiences for both children and adults
Board the frigate Jylland and let the stormy 19th-century Europe wash over you as the museum’s engaging guides tell gripping stories of great naval battles and voyages to distant shores.
Let the children explore with the cabin boy Karl, who has lost his pocket knife somewhere on board. Along the way, you meet the ship’s crew like topman Niels, princess Thyra, gunner Bjørnson, and ship’s doctor Melchior, each telling imaginative stories – and maybe you can spot if any of them are hiding a secret or are a real ship rat thief?
The frigate Jylland also offers exciting special exhibitions that shed light on the cultural history of seafaring and life at sea – something for both curious children and adults.
Sailing trip in Ebeltoft Bay
In the summer months, there is an opportunity to go out on Ebeltoft Bay in the museum’s open rowing barge – a sailboat with room for 12 people. From here, you get a beautiful view of both the frigate and Ebeltoft harbor.
Living craftsmanship
The museum craftsmen maintain the frigate with traditional ship carpentry, rope making, and tarring year-round. This means you can also experience the work up close and gain insight into how a historic warship is kept seaworthy.
Shop and restaurant
Also, take a look at the museum shop, which offers a selection of maritime gifts and classic souvenirs. And when your legs need a break, you can enjoy a good meal or a cold drink at Brasserie 1864 – just a stone’s throw from the ship.
Facts about the frigate
The frigate Jylland is 102 meters long and has a deck width of about 14 meters. The masts rise over 50 meters into the air, and the hull extends almost 6 meters below the water surface. Today, the ship stands on land in a dry dock, allowing you to walk all the way around it and truly sense its impressive size – both inside and out.
